New Report: Beyond Bans and Surveillance, A Youth Empowerment Framework for AI Education
Kigumi Group is pleased to announce the release of our latest white paper on AI in education, Beyond Bans and Surveillance: A Youth Empowerment Framework for AI Education, developed as part of an initiative by Kigumi Group's Youth Advisory Panel. The paper offers educators, school leaders, and parents a practical, evidence-based framework for AI literacy and responsible AI use in schools.
As generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude enter classrooms worldwide, many educators' first instinct is to respond with AI detection software, bans, and surveillance. This paper argues that approach echoes decades of failed adult interventions on other sensitive youth issues — and offers an alternative. Drawing on six global case studies of evidence-based youth empowerment programs, the paper presents a practical framework built on three approaches — participatory formats, small-group and affinity spaces, and peer-led mentorship — to help adults move from a culture of surveillance to a culture of trust around student AI use, academic integrity, and digital wellbeing.
The paper was co-authored by Varsha Suryadevara and Lucy Li Gusmao, Gen Z members of Kigumi Group's Youth Advisory Panel, with Mila Devenport serving as Editor and Supervisor. Their firsthand, youth-led perspective grounds the paper's case studies and recommendations in real adolescent experience with AI in schools.
